James L. Sandefer of Surprise, Ariz, died Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Del Webb Community Hospital in Sin City West, Ariz. He was 69.

Services are planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Resurrection Cemetary Chapel in Oklahoma City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunland Memorial Park & Mortuary of Sun City, Ariz.

The son of Charles and Ella Wood Sandefer, he was born Oct. 21, 1925, in Haskell County. He graduated from Healdton High School and, at the age of 14, with his parent's permission, enlisted in the United States Navy during world War II,serving eight years.

A graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a master's degree in education, he enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant. He went on to spend 28 years in the army, serving in Vietnam and the last eight years at the Pentagon, retiring in 1981.

Following his retirement he moved to Morrilton, Ark. In 1984 he moved to Oklahoma City where he worked for Abide Realty for eight years. Mr. Sandefer moved to Arizona in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Ann of Surprise, Ariz; two sons, David of Norman, and James of Tucson, Ariz; two step-sons, Brian Lara of Wichita, Kan., and John Lara of Tarzana, Calif; two daughters, Mary Lou Stevens of Stillwater and Emily Kay Sandefer of Norman; a step- daughter, Elizabeth Lara of Tarzana, Calif; three grandchildren; and three step-children.

The family has suggested the American Diabetes Association or a charity of the donor's choice as appropriate for memorial contributions.

Mr. Sandefer would walk up to you during football practice look down at you while your nose was bleeding and say its just like life tuff game Marsh but I loved him like brother and respected him like a dad.
